The Environmental Review Workshop is organizing an online community of volunteer engineers and scientists to review documents posted online by governmental agencies, typically for 30-day Public Comment periods. Each volunteer works from home or wherever they access the internet. We review environmental reports and engineering plans where the technical nature of the projects prevents most stakeholders from providing input; other sites are remote or may have low community interest. In this manner we provide public oversight for environmentally sensitive project during the public review stages for permit applications, periodic reviews, cleanup plans, development plans with environmental concerns and so forth.
We review the documents for technical adequacy, consistency with regulations, guidance documents, and completeness. For examples of our work click on the listing of states on the left side of this view. So far we have provided comments in around 30 states and we are making plans to expand to all 50 states. See also responses to our comments provided by the governmental agencies hosting the public comment periods. An exciting aspect of our work is we get to choose what types of projects to work on. That allows professionals with experience to focus on their area of expertise and allows for self-directed professional development for those new to the field.
Experience as a consultant or regulator is preferred however recent college graduates and students in sciences and engineering may also apply.
